Historical Site - Jam Gadang West Sumatera
Jam Gadang is a clock tower located in the city of Bukittinggi, +/- 100 km from the city of Padang (Capital of West Sumatra Province) Indonesia. This clock tower has a clock with a large size on four sides so called Jam Gadang, Minangkabau language term meaning "big clock". Clock Tower In addition to being a central marker of Bukittinggi, Jam Gadang has also been used as a tourist attraction with the expansion of the park around the clock tower. The park became a space of community interaction both on weekdays and on holidays. Common events are usually held around the park near the clock tower. Jam Gadang was completed in 1926 as a gift from the Queen of the Netherlands to Rook Maker, secretary or controleur Fort de Kock (now the City of Bukittinggi) during the reign of the Dutch East Indies. The clock tower architecture was designed by Yazid Rajo Mangkuto, while the first stone laying was done by Rook Maker's first son who was then 6 years old. The development of Jam Gadang cost about 3,000 guilders, which is a fantastic cost for that time. So since it was built and since its inauguration, this clock tower has become the center of everyone's attention. It also causes Jam Gadang then serve as a marker or landmark and also the zero point of Bukittinggi City.
